Mexico’s government says it has struck a deal with various licence holders to recover a 130MHz chunk of unused 2.5GHz spectrum.

According to the country’s transport and telecommunication ministry, reported by Reuters, nine out 11 concession holders – including MVS Multivision, a broadband wireless provider – gave up their shares in the spectrum voluntary.

The wireless frequencies may well be auctioned off to boost completion.

“Recovering this spectrum for the nation strengthens the state’s ability to achieve greater broadband service coverage,” the ministry said.

Concessions for the remaining 60MHz in the 2.5GHz frequency band have been extended for 15 years.

The move to reclaim unused spectrum is in keeping with President Enrique Pena Nieto’s reforms to boost competition in the mobile, fixed and TV sectors.

America Movil is particularly vulnerable, having around 70 per cent market share in the mobile market (and an even greater 80 per cent market share of the fixed market).
