Japan’s KDDI is the latest operator to report a jump in profit on the back of stellar smartphone sales.

In its fiscal Q3 (ending in December), the firm reported a 85 percent year-on-year rise in net profit to JPY100.49 billion ($1.1 billion). Sales were up 7.5 percent to JPY969.98 billion.

KDDI sold 2.4 million smartphones in the quarter, accounting for the majority of its 3.1 million total mobile phone sales. Smartphones accounted for 83 percent of sales in the month of December, the firm said.

The net subscriber gain was 707,000, bringing its total to 36.8 million, up 7.3 percent from a year earlier.

The firm has raised its total smartphone sales target for its current fiscal year (ending March) to 8.45 million, up from an earlier forecast of 8 million.

However, it lowered its net profit outlook for the year to JPY235 billion from JPY250 billion, due to a higher-than-expected write-down of its fixed assets.
