Shaygan Kheradpir (pictured) has resigned as CEO and director of Juniper Networks, following “a review by the board of directors of his leadership and his conduct in connection with a particular negotiation” with an unnamed customer, the company said in a statement.

The statement by the networking equipment manufacturer went on to say that “the board and Kheradpir have different perspectives regarding these matters.”

Kheradpir become CEO in January following his job as COO of Barclays Bank and CTO and CIO of Verizon before that.

He has been replaced by Rami Rahim, who has been with Juniper for 17 years and served as executive vice president and general manager, Juniper Development and Innovation.

Juniper has had a tumultuous year. In January, when Kheradpir took over, it was pressurised by activist hedge fund Elliott Management for cost cuts and share buybacks and in February it agreed to return at least $3 billion.

Last month, its forecast fourth-quarter revenue and profit fell short of estimates by analysts. Its shares fell yesterday, following news of the resignation.

“It’s not about who got replaced or how they got replaced, but in the whole tumultuous industry, everyone is trying to figure out how to stay relevant… Juniper really needs to get back to the core values,” said Andre Kindness, an analyst at Forrester Research, speaking to Bloomberg.
