LIVE FROM MOBILE ASIA EXPO 2013: Chinese network manufacturer Datang is the latest Asian vendor to jump on the ‘5G’ bandwagon, with the company’s CEO Ma Jiancheng (pictured) using this morning’s keynote session to talk up his company’s focus in this area.

“We are doing a lot of research on 5G technology and standards,” he told delegates. Ma Jiancheng said 5G will “continue to enhance bandwidths” and provide download speeds beyond 1Gb/s.

The CEO didn’t reveal specific details about what Datang is working on, but repeatedly expressed commitment to future 5G mobile technology.

Datang’s pledge follows a statement from Huawei earlier this week it is “at the cutting edge of technology exploration and development for 5G wireless.” Last month, Samsung said it had developed 5G technology which it would look to commercialise by 2020.

Despite such developments, there remains no official definition of what the term 5G actually means.
