Evernote secures $20M investment from Nikkei

10 NOV 2014

Evernote, the productivity app maker, announced that its Context feature will soon display editorial content from Nikkei, following a deal that will also see the Japanese news organisation invest $20 million in the company.

Developed by Evernote’s Augmented Intelligence team and launched last month, Context is available to Premium and Business subscribers.

It displays relevant content based on what users are working on, to “create a digital workspace that informs and supports users as they accomplish their best work”. Nikkei’s content will be included after integration is completed early next year.

It is worth noting that 30 per cent of Evernote’s 100 million users are located in Asia.

“This multifaceted partnership gives us an opportunity to pair that important and timely content with Evernote’s workspace-enhanced features for a direct and positive impact on the way people work and share knowledge every day,” said Evernote CEO Phil Libin.

Context was launched in October with English language support for Mac and iOS. The integration with Nikkei coincides with the introduction of full Japanese language support on those platforms. Android and Windows support are expected to follow.

The move is in keeping with Libin’s outline of the company’s strategy in September when he spoke of plans to expand Evernote’s presence in Asia and suggested an IPO is a possibility in the next few years.
