Samsung reclaims US smartphone top spot

01 JUL 2015

Samsung reclaimed its position as the top smartphone vendor in the US, following the success of the Galaxy S6 device, according to data released by research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

The Galaxy S6 was named the third best-selling smartphone in the country, behind the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S5 over a three month period ending in May.

Kantar analysts said figures from both Samsung devices combined was enough to give it a greater overall share over Apple.

The results also showed a slight decline in overall Apple iOS sales, revealing a 2.4 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year. Conversely, Android’s share grew, increasing by 2.8 per cent to 64.9 per cent overall.

“The first full month of sales of the Galaxy S6 allowed Samsung to regain the market lead in the US and grow its Android sales, from 52 per cent to 55 per cent for the three months ending in May,” said Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. “Sales of Android-based smartphones were fuelled not only by Samsung, but also by LG, which was able to nearly double its share of the US smartphone market year over year.”

Milanesi said other Android players, including HTC and Motorola. had a more difficult period, with their share decreasing both year over year and period over period, which could “raise hope for competitors – such as Huawei and Sony, who have yet to wow US consumers”.
