Ambitious Chinese device maker Xiaomi is to further its international push this year with launch in another 10 countries.
The fast-rising vendor has its sights set on India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam and plans to follow this with rollout in Brazil, Mexico, Russia and Turkey by the end of 2014.
Xiaomi announced its plans at a press event in Beijing today, where it also unveiled two new ’Mi’ routers and a TV set-top box. Speculation that the firm would release its first tablet was not accurate.
Xiaomi is embarking on a major international push. Yesterday the company simplified its website domain to Mi.com in an effort to become more accessible to an international audience.
And Xiaomi is in the midst of a geographic expansion; beyond the greater China market (Hong Kong and Taiwan), devices are also being sold in Singapore. It is set to ship 60 million units this year and is said to be targeting 100 million units in 2015.
Founded in 2010 as a company to make software for mobile devices running Google’s Android system, Xiaomi introduced its first smartphone in 2011. The company subsequently added the MiBox, a television set-top box, and then last September announced a 47-inch TV that connects to the Web running the Android operating system. Xiaomi’s valuation hit $10 billion with a fundraising round in August 2013.
