Ambitious Chinese device maker Xiaomi is set to release its first tablet “soon”, as it continues the rollout of its smartphones internationally.

According to Reuters, the company will hold a launch event in Beijing this week, although it is not clear if this will see the launch of a tablet.

Such a device is likely to be called MiPad and feature a 7.9-inch screen.

Xiaomi broadened its mobile portfolio earlier this year with the launch of its RedMi Note phablet (5.5-inch screen).

Xiaomi is this year set to launch its operations in ten new markets beyond Greater China and Singapore, where it already has a presence.

The company this week launched a website for the Malaysian market, stating that the Mi3 smartphone will be available in the country from 20 May priced at MYR889 ($275).

It has aggressive sales targets in place for 2014: according to Tech In Asia, Xiaomi is looking to ship 60 million units, compared with fewer than 20 million in 2013.
