Ambitious Chinese device maker Xiaomi is reported to be looking at further expansion in India and Southeast Asia, following the launch of its smartphones in Singapore this week.

According to Hugo Barra, the company’s VP with responsibility for international growth, the company is looking closely at India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, and has opened an office in Singapore to oversee international growth.

Tech In Asia reports that Xiaomi said that Singapore was selected as the first stop beyond greater China because of its “small but very sophisticated” market.

However, the company has ruled out an entry into the US and European markets, which are already more developed – and fiercely competitive.

Singapore operator StarHub is set to offer the Xiaomi Redmi from next week. It will be available for free on selected contract plans or at $169 with a prepaid bundle.

Xiaomi is targeting smartphone sales of 40 million units in 2014, more than doubling the amount shifted last year.
