Ambitious Chinese device maker Xiaomi said that its revenue in the first half of 2013 had exceeded what it made in all of 2012, driven by sales of 7.03 million smartphones during the period.

According to the company, its revenue for the period was CNY13.27 billion ($2.15 billion), compared with CNY12.6 billion for the full year 2012.

It also said that as of the end of June 2013, it had more than 14 million device users in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, while its MIUI platform had reached 20 million users.

According to earlier reports, Xiaomi is looking to sell 15 million handsets this year, meaning the 7 million achieved so far indicates it is on target for this.

However, it has also been claimed that a mass-market device from the vendor, called “Hong Mi”, had been shelved after approvals needed from the Chinese authorities were withdrawn.
