“Luxury” mobile phone maker Vertu announced its latest device, which unusually comes close in terms of specifications to devices from other smartphone makers – although the price tag of around $10,000 will help preserve its exclusivity.

The company said Signature Touch “blends best-in-class technology with superior handcrafted materials, including grade 5 titanium and hand-finished calf leather”. It includes sound “tuned in collaboration with B&O and featuring Dolby Digital Plus virtual surround sound”, as well as imaging capabilities developed in partnership with Hasselblad.

Vertu also said it has “rebooted” its “world renowned service offering”, which includes a “full range of curated privileges and services”. This includes its Concierge personal assistant service, Life privileges programme, and Certainty security features.

With the company having previously said it will “never be at the bleeding edge of technology”, Signature Touch is a significant step-up.

The Android 4.4-powered device has a 4.7-inch 1080p display giving 473 pixels per inch, and is powered by a 2.3GHz quadcore Qualcomm processor. It has a 13 megapixel main camera, 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera, and 64GB of internal memory.

It also includes LTE connectivity.

Neil Hooper, R&D director for the company, said: “Vertu customers are truly global; consequently we want to ensure that they enjoy great quality calls wherever they are. We achieve this by ensuring that we cover a greater array of bands, including the latest 4G, than virtually any other phone available. Regardless of where our customers are travelling, they receive peerless coverage from their Signature Touch.”

Vertu Signature Touch will be available in stores from June 2014. Price is “on application”, although reports peg the base model at a little over $10,000.

Massimiliano Pogliani, CEO, said: “We are in the fortunate, perhaps unique position of being able to draw upon an excess of 15 years’ in-house expertise and we have invested in, and relentlessly interrogated, the latest insights from the luxury sector. In Signature Touch we have created a phone that exceeds our customers’ expectations and that we believe will cement our position as leader of the luxury mobile category.”
