UK retail giant Tesco unveiled an update to its own-brand tablet, Hudl, ahead of the Christmas holiday sales period.

It reaches the market at a similar time to Amazon’s refreshed Fire HD line, which features a 7-inch screen priced at £119 – meaning Hudl2 will at least have the edge on display size.

Indeed, the main difference with Hudl2 is the shift to an 8.3-inch full HD screen, from a 7-inch HD screen on its predecessor. Other specifications have also seen a bump, including its 1.83GHz quadcore Intel processor (from unspecified 1.5GHz quadcore) and 5MP front camera (from 3MP).

It is powered by Android 4.4.2 and, as with the previous generation device, has 16GB storage.

There have been a number of software enhancements. The retailer said that its digital services such as Blinkbox, Clubcard and Tesco.com have been “tailored to an individual user’s needs and preferences so are more intuitive, simple and easy-to-use”.

And it has worked with The Parent Zone to develop “a market leading parental filter” so children and parents can both use hudl2 “safely”.

Hudl2 is priced at £129, compared with £119 for the first-generation device at launch.

The retailer said that it sold more than 750,000 first-generation Hudl tablets, including more than 35,000 on the first two days of release.
