Chinese device maker TCL released a new series of colourful 4G smartphones and a line of smart watches running on Android Wear, both under the Go label, at the IFA show in Berlin.

TCL, which uses the Alcatel OneTouch brand in international markets, said the Go Play smartphones are aimed at the youth market and are shockproof, waterproof and dustproof.

They have a 5-inch HD screen, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. The LTE devices run on Android 5.0 and come in eight colours with matching headsets and cases.

Users can shoot photos and video underwater with the 8-megapixel back camera or 5-megapixel front camera. A new feature lets users record what’s on their screens and add photos and comments. The videos can be shared over pre-installed apps such as Periscope, Vine and Zello.

Users can create an emotional graphic based on input from a gyroscope, heart rate sensor and accelerometer. The “emotion pulse” can be shared on social media or set as the wallpaper. The sensors allow users to measure their steps as well as monitor their sleep.

It charges via a micro-USB port and has a battery life of two to five days, the company said.

In July TCL said it had shipped 20.9 million smart devices in the first six months of 2015, marking a year-on-year growth of 39 per cent. The company claimed total sales of handsets and other products reached 34.8 million units, representing growth of 16 per cent.
