Sony Mobile announced its Xperia ZR smartphone, a high-end device it says features “the highest level of water-resistance for capturing photos and Full HD videos underwater”.

The device has a 4.6-inch screen, 13 megapixel fast-capture camera, and is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. It also includes LTE connectivity.

The camera is powered by Sony’s “Exmor RS for Mobile” sensor, with HDR (high dynamic range) for both photos and videos. The screen is driven by Sony’s “Mobile Bravia Engine 2”, which uses “contrast enhancement technology expertise” from the company’s television range.

It also includes a “battery stamina mode”, which is said to significantly improve the standby time of a device by automatically shutting-down battery-draining apps whenever the screen is off, and restarting them when it is on.

It will be accompanied by “the largest ever range of NFC-enabled accessories”, including speakers, headphones and televisions.

Xperia ZR will launch in “various global markets” from Q2 2013. It will be available in black, white, pink and mint.
