Samsung announced another addition to its Galaxy smartphone portfolio, in the shape of its metal-framed Galaxy Alpha – a device which seems to have taken some cues from Apple’s iPhone.
Indeed the 4.7-inch screen device does look set to provide a strong rival to the next-generation iPhone, which is reported to have a similar sized display.
But it has been also noted that while the device’s metal edging gives it more of a premium feel, significant parts of the body are still plastic – meaning it may not give the same perception of quality as the iPhone.
Galaxy Alpha is powered by an octacore processor (quad 1.8GHz and quad 1.3GHz) with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, include LTE support, and feature a 12 megapixel rear camera.
The company said that at less than 7mm in thickness, it is “one of the slimmest Galaxy devices ever”.
But the screen resolution of 1280×720 pixels hardly stands out, and the device also lacks a microSD expansion slot – although this is also omitted from the iPhone, and 32GB is an healthy on-board provision.
Jong-Kyun Shin, CEO of the IT & Mobile Communication unit at Samsung, said: “With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device.”
Galaxy Alpha will be available at the beginning of September, meaning it reaches the market slightly ahead of the anticipated debut of Apple’s next-generation flagship.
It will be available in black, white, gold, silver and blue.
