Samsung is set to use its bendable display technology to offer a device with a wrap-around display, according to Bloomberg.

Apparently, the two side portions of the display will be able to operate independently, enabling them to display different information to the main part.

But there was a lot of uncertainty about the report, including whether the device will form part of the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note ranges, or will be the first in a new line.

Unveiled at CES 2013 earlier this year, the company’s bendable displays have already found their way into a curved-screen device, the recently announced Galaxy Round.

Rival LG has also unveiled a curved device, G Flex, which uses flexible screen technology.

What is not clear yet is whether bendable screens will offer a real differentiation feature for users, or are little more than a gimmick.

While the current products include some new features, such as the ability to wake the device and view some information by rocking the device on a flat surface, by and large the differentiation hinges on the device being unusual.

However, it appears that Samsung is looking at new features that can be enabled by the screens in its second-generation of products, which may make them more appealing to customers.

Of course, Samsung does have something of a track-record of using its first-generation products as a proof-of-concept, before developing more consumer-friendly products.

For example, it has already been reported that the company sees its current Galaxy Gear smart watch as a way to gauge demand, before introducing a more capable next-generation product.

Whether or not bendable screens will prove to be a real draw for consumers, or whether they are the latest gimmick used by manufacturers in the quest for differentiation, is yet to be seen.
