Samsung announced a version of its Galaxy S5 which it described as “the world’s first commercially available Broadband LTE-A (cat 6) smartphone”, supporting theoretical peak download speeds of 225 Mb/s.

The company said this follows the launch of the Galaxy SII, which was the world’s first LTE smartphone (2012), and the Galaxy S4 LTE-A, the world’s first LTE-Advanced smartphone (2013).

Unsurprisingly, the device will initially be available in Samsung’s home market of South Korea “beginning this summer”, where the operators have been especially aggressive in the rollout of advanced 4G networks.

“The Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A provides users with stronger and faster connectivity united with our notable flagship experience to further demonstrate our commitment to meeting the needs of our consumers on a global scale,” said Jong-Kyun Shin, CEO and president of the IT & Mobile Communications division at Samsung.

The first operator deployments of Category 6 LTE-Advanced technology are expected to take place from late 2014 into early 2015.
