LIVE FROM LONDON LAUNCH: Samsung tonight unveiled two new tablets in its Ativ range of Windows 8 devices, one of which is the dual mode Q which also runs the Android Jellybean (4.2.2) OS. The second tablet was called the Tab 3, running Windows and claimed to be “the world’s thinnest Windows 8 tablet.”

The Q (pictured, below), which has a 13.3 inch screen, enables users to flick between Windows and Android without rebooting. The set-up also means users can use Android apps when in Windows mode, a boost for the latter given its relative lack of apps compared to Android.

2Among its other qualities, the South Korean vendor also talked up the brightness of the Q’s screen, and a battery life that lasts up to nine hours.

“We’ve taken the outstanding Galaxy DNA and incorporated it into Windows OS-based devices; the Ativ family,” said Patrick Povel, Samsung’s head of European marketing for Ativ. “We’ve redesigned and recreated the Ativ from scratch to provide the mobility and power performance that people demand.”

The Ativ Tab 3 is a pure Windows device (running Windows 8, rather than RT) that also features Samsung’s popular S Pen stylus. The company talked up its thinness at 8.2 mm, as well as its weight (550 grams). It has a 10.1 inch screen and battery life of 8.5 hours.

Pricing and availability details for the two new tablets were not revealed.

It was noticeable that no new Windows smartphones were unveiled. In addition to the two tablets, Samsung did unveil a number of Windows notebooks but handsets were distinctly absent.
