Nokia is reportedly readying a “phablet” device for launch later this year, featuring a 6-inch full-HD screen.

According to The Verge, the device will run “the latest version of Windows Phone” and be powered by a quadcore Qualcomm processor. It will also have a rear camera that is “at least 20 megapixels”.

To date, Nokia has been unable to capitalise on the trend for large screen devices, due to the lack of support for suitable resolutions in the Windows Phone platform.

Likewise, its processor choice has been limited to dual-core Qualcomm chips, again due to the constraints imposed by Windows Phone.

Microsoft has not so-far announced an update to Windows Phone which would enable support for the reported features – although it is around a year since the first devices powered by WP8 were unveiled.

The largest product currently in Nokia’s device line is the 4.7-inch screened Lumia 625, announced late last month.

But this means it does not have a device comparable with flagships from Samsung, Sony or HTC – although Apple breaks with the trend with its 4-inch screen iPhone.

Indeed, the Lumia 625 is not being positioned as a “flagship” device, no doubt due to the fact that in terms of cold, hard specifications it loses out.

In addition to having a 1.2GHz dual core processor in comparison with quadcore chips in rival devices, it has a 800×480 pixel display, rather than a 1280×720 or 1920×1080 HD screen.
