Amazon is planning a refresh of its Kindle Fire tablet line, as the online retailer continues to battle Apple’s iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab line, BGR reports.

The company is set to update the entry-level 7-inch Kindle Fire with a higher-resolution display, taking on the specifications of the current Kindle Fire HD.

In turn, the Kindle Fire HD screen will see a “substantial upgrade” from 1280 x 800 pixels to 1920 x 1200 pixels, with the same 7-inch size.

And the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD will see its resolution boosted from 1920 x 1200 pixels to 2560 x 1600 pixels – beating the retina display used in Apple’s iPad.

The devices will also feature an upgraded design, with more use of flat surfaces and less rounded corners creating a design which BGR said had been described as “chiseled”.

The new products are also said to be “noticeably lighter” than the models being replaced.

While device costs were not disclosed, Amazon has been aggressive with its pricing of devices, with the aim of generating profit from the subsequent sales of content and apps.

This means it is likely the new units will come in at a similar cost to the tablets they are replacing.
