VIDEO INTERVIEW: New technologies will “enable designers to be more creative” when developing wearable devices, Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Interactive Platforms, told Mobile World Live.

The executive highlighted the role of technologies such as always-on Mirasol displays, “because you don’t want to be turning screens on and off, all over your body”, and wireless charging.

“If wearables are going to become more like jewellery, you’re not going to be plugging USB cables into them. You want to just throw them into the bowl and have them charge, because you are going to have probably many of these things,” Chandhok said.

The executive said that Qualcomm’s Toq watch has been important in underlining the company’s commitment to this space. “There are a lot of people that weren’t talking to us about wearables until we put out the Toq watch in September,” he said.

“The thing that I think is exciting right now is that people are starting to see that relationship between those devices and the rest of their ecosystem around it,” Chandhok noted.

The executive also talked about augmented reality, and Qualcomm’s relationship with the AllSeen Alliance for the internet of things.
