Pebble has updated its watch platform to add support for Google’s Android Wear notifications, enabling its devices to replicate the functionality of many competing products.

The company said that a new firmware update for the device, as well as an update for the companion app, enable users to interact in ways “Android Wear devices themselves don’t”. This includes support for user-defined responses to notifications.

Pebble has beta-tested the update since December 2014.

The compatibility is possible “thanks to the open approach Google built into Android’s notification system”.

“Openness is a value Pebble shares and appreciates. We hope more mobile operating systems follow suit so all Pebblers—no matter their smartphone choice—can take advantage of all the delightful features we introduce now, and in the future,” the company said in a blog post.

The release also includes bug fixes and stability improvements.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Eric Migicovsky, CEO of Pebble, is promising new devices for this year, as it looks to maintain momentum in a market that is seeing increased competition from Android Wear players, as well as the imminent launch of Apple’s Watch.

The company shipped its one millionth smartwatch in December 2014, seven quarters after launch.
