Nokia WP PureView speculation hots up

12 JUN 2013

There was continued speculation that Nokia is set to imminently launch a smartphone with a camera to rival the 41MP unit in the 808 PureView, largely fuelled by “leaked” pictures of the device.

The images show a Windows Phone-powered smartphone with a large rear protrusion where the camera sits. The device apparently has a mechanical shutter and Xenon flash.

It also apparently features a quadcore processor, marking a first for Windows Phone – and meaning it will run an updated version of the Microsoft OS.

Other mooted features include 32GB of onboard storage, with no memory card slot to provide additional capacity.

Among the reported features is the ability to capture a 35MP and 5MP image simultaneously, with the smaller version intended for online sharing.

Windows Phone Central said the device is currently being tested in the US by operator AT&T, using the codename “Elvis”.

There was speculation that Nokia was working on a Windows Phone device with headline-grabbing camera within days of the launch of the Symbian OS-powered PureView 808 – although this took place more than 12 months ago.

UPDATE 17/6: Late last week Nokia sent out invites to an event on July 11 in New York City. Initial reports suggest the unveiling of a high-end camera phone.
