Motorola made its return to the Chinese market, which its head, Rick Osterloh, described as “the biggest and most exciting smartphone market in the world”.

“Motorola was the first company to develop and manufacture Android phones in China. We did this back in 2010 with a device called XT800, one of the most popular devices of its time. Now, five years later, we’re back with the best portfolio of Android devices ever made,” he said.

But Motorola is now part of Lenovo, the Chinese computing giant, and jointly the companies hold number three spot in the global smartphone market. It will be interesting to see how the company differentiates between its own-brand products, and those from Motorola: Osterloh is positioning his business as “focused on delivering the very best for consumers, and giving them the power to choose”.

According to Reuters, the executive said that its strategy for China is “global products tailored and customised for local markets.” But it will still find itself facing tough competition from both local and international competitors.

The company is launching three smartphones into China: Moto X, Moto X Pro (pictured), and Moto G. Moto X is already available for pre-order through some channels, with Moto G to following February and Moto X Pro reaching customers in March.

The cheapest device in the range is the CNY1,299 ($208) Moto G with 8GB of storage.

Moto X and Moto X Pro support the 4G networks of all three Chinese operators. Moto G is available in two versions, one for China Mobile and China Unicom, and one for China Telecom.

Also available is the Moto Hint ‘wireless earbud’, which the vendor said “gives you complete control of your phone and allows you to access everything you need by just using your voice.” With regard to the launch of the Moto 360 smartwatch in China, Osterloh said that it is “just a matter of time”.
