Ambitious Indian device maker Micromax announced a new high-end device called Canvas Nitro A310, “in its pursuit of democratising technology by offering innovative solutions”.

The Android 4.4-powered device has a 5-inch HD screen, 1.7GHz octacore MediaTek processor, 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and up to 32GB of storage.

Targeting “the internet savvy youth across India”, it is available through online retailer Snapdeal for INR12,990 ($215). It comes in blue or white, with a “premium leather finish back”.

Micromax faces tough competition in its home market, with Motorola’s revamped Moto G likely to perform well, and Xiaomi also pushing hard following its debut in the country.

There had been some speculation that Micromax would also unveil its first device powered by Android One, the hardware and software platform from Google targeting low-cost smartphones.

It was subsequently mooted that this will now take place next week.
