LG announced a new high-end phone with some interesting differentiating features, as it looks to boost its performance into the traditionally lucrative Q4 sales period.

The most striking feature of the device, called V10, is the addition of a 2.1-inch second screen above the main display, which the vendor said “can be set-up as an ‘always-on’ display to enhance the V10’s productiveness without impacting battery life”. When the main screen is on, it can be used as a dedicated launching area for shortcuts and apps.

Other highlighted features include dual 5MP front cameras, which can be used to capture wide-angle selfies without the need to pan the smartphone, and the addition of a “manual mode” for video, enabling manipulation of options such as shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, white balance and focus.

LG’s performance in the later part of the year will be important, following a lacklustre Q2, although it had a strong start to 2015. The company’s performance over the last few years is probably best described as lumpy, although it has seen a run of profitable periods from early 2014.

Other features of V10 include a 5.7-inch QHD main display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with 4GB of RAM, and 16MP main camera. It has 64GB of onboard storage and MicroSD expansion slot.

It will be available from this month in South Korea, followed by US, China and “key countries” in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Alongside the V10 launch, LG also announced “the first Android Wear device to feature cellular connectivity”, with the “2nd Edition” of its LG Watch Urbane.

The company said that it “works seamlessly with Android smartphones or can go it alone, when carrying a smartphone isn’t practical or convenient”.

It will initially be available in the US and South Korea, followed by markets in Europe, CIS, Asia and the Middle East.
