LIVE FROM CES 2014: As expected, South Korean electronics giant LG announced a move into the much-hyped fitness tech wearables space, confirmed US operator support for its curved-screen G Flex smartphone and provided an update on its plans to launch WebOS-based smart TVs.

“Wearable tech is going to be huge at this year’s CES and we are happy to get the ball rolling,” said an LG exec before introducing its Lifeband Touch product (pictured) – an activity-tracking wristband that collects fitness data. The company also touted its new Heart Rate Earphones. Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate Earphones will be available starting in the US in the first half of 2014, to be followed by rollouts in other markets.

On the smartphone front, its recently announced curved G Flex device will be available from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile by the end of the first quarter.

The firm’s Frank Lee claimed the device’s curved screen and battery is a real game-changer for the industry and will put LG “ahead of the pack” as a world-first (although rival Samsung may dispute that claim with a curved device of its own). “We didn’t make G Flex just for the sake of being different – it views better, holds better, hears better,” said Lee. “It offers outstanding voice and sound experience.”

Meanwhile specific details around its WebOS platform for smart TVs were not disclosed, but the company said it has made major progress with the technology since acquiring the operating system from HP last March.

“There are 160 million smart TVs out there – most people think they are too complicated,” said an LG exec. “With WebOS we have simplified how you connect, switch and discover content.” The company promises that over half of its TV models produced this year will support the WebOS smart TV platform.

And the company was joined onstage by Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, who announced that his company it will soon provide 4K content programming (‘House of Cards’)  that will maximise the performance of the WebOS TVs.

Finally, LG announced a partnership with messaging app Line that will let consumers control their ‘smart appliances’ such as fridges, washing machines and vacuum cleaners with text message via its HomeChat service.
