LG Electronics announced an international rollout of an Android-powered clamshell phone, which it said is “designed especially for a generation of users who are more accustomed to the feel of flip”.

While the company, and its countrymate Samsung, have offered clamshell devices for their home markets, vendors have moved away from the form factor across other markets. Indeed the new LG device, LG Wine Smart, is already available in South Korea as the LG Gentle.

For its international launch this month, it will be available in countries including France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Kazakhstan and Japan, among others.

In a statement, LG said that “thanks to the positive response to the original Wine Smart introduced in Korea last year, LG optimised the latest model with more advanced multimedia features to make the transition from feature phone to smartphone as seamless as possible”.

In terms of specifications, the device is uninspiring. It has a 3.2-inch (480×320 pixel) screen, 1.1GHz quadcore processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage (with microSD slot). It also has 3MP rear and a VGA front cameras.

Reflecting the more mature nature of the potential customer base, it features “larger-than-normal icons” and supports the vendor’s Safety Care feature, which can be set to automatically transmit emergency alerts and location to pre-selected contacts.

Pricing and carrier details for the Android 5.1.1 device will be announced locally at the time of launch. It will be available in burgundy or navy.
