LG Electronics is echoing the strategy of its South Korean counterpart Samsung by selecting a letter to denote its premium smartphones, announcing its next flagship will be known as “G2”.

The device will be the successor to the Optimus G, but will now drop the Optimus part of the name. LG also offers the Optimus G Pro phablet.

The company also said that its “premium 4:3 display smartphones” will be known as “Vu”, again dropping the Optimus branding.

Samsung uses the “S” brand to denote its flagships, which has been extended beyond its S4 smartphone to include the S4 Mini, S4 Active and S4 Zoom.

Sony has also settled on the Z designator for its high-end devices including the Z and ZR smartphones, Tablet Z and Z Ultra phablet.

Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG’s Mobile business, said: “Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience. The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous G Series products.”

According to PocketDroid, LG has recently filed a number of trademark applications which indicate that G-brand might be used for related products – including tablets and wearable computing devices.

The filings are: G Pad, G Watch, G Glass, G Link, G Band and G Hub.
