LG Electronics is to offer a free Google Cardboard smartphone mount with its G3 device, a move it said will make virtual reality “more accessible to mainstream customers”.

Rather than using expensive VR hardware with its own integrated technology, Google Cardboard mounts the smartphone in front of the user’s face. LG said that the 2K screen on the G3 is able to “provide users with much sharper image quality for a smoother, more realistic, VR experience”.

It also said that the VR for G3 bundle has a “unique design” that uses the G3’s “signature rear key layout”. A neodymium ring magnet on the side of the headset also works with the magnetic gyroscope sensor in the G3 to select applications and scroll through menus without touching the screen.

The promotion, which rolls out this month in “select markets”, also includes a free game, Robobliteration. Other apps are available for download via the Google Play store.
