High-flying Chinese firm Lenovo, which recently posted record quarterly results, is gearing up to sell smartphones in Germany.

Speaking to Handelsblatt, a German business newspaper, Stefan Engel – who heads up Lenovo’s operations in the country – said smartphone sales were scheduled “during the next business year”, although no firm date has been decided.

According to the newspaper article, reported by Dow Jones, Engel said Lenovo must first set up a phone distribution network.

Although the Chinese manufacturer is already selling notebooks and computers in Germany, smartphones are generally offered by network providers. As such, said Engel, Lenovo needs to build up contacts with operators during the coming months.

The unveiling of expansion plans in Germany comes on the heels of recently-announced Q2 results that saw profits surge 36 per cent, to $220 million, as sales of mobile devices more than doubled from a year ago.

Revenue increased by 36 per cent to $9.8 billion.

Its smartphone, smart TV and tablet business accounted for 15 per cent of total revenue

Lenovo’s combined shipments of smartphones and tablets surpassed those of PCs for the second quarter in a row, and it cemented its position as the world’s fourth-largest smartphone vendor with year-on-year shipment growth of 78 per cent.

Revenue from the EMEA region climbed 26 per cent, to US$2.3 billion, or 23 per cent of Lenovo’s worldwide sales.

Growth, however, was largely on the back of record PC shipments.
