Ambitious Chinese device maker Lenovo is apparently set to adopt a metal body for its next-generation flagship, which is rumoured to be called Vibe Z2 Pro.

According to Engadget, the new device will have a 6-inch quad-HD screen, matching the highest-spec displays used on rival devices. Other mooted specifications include a 16MP camera with image stabilisation, 2.5GHz quadcore Qualcomm processor, and high-capacity battery.

It is the successor to last year’s “razor thin” Vibe Z (pictured), which also marked the vendor’s first foray into the LTE market.

Lenovo recently revealed it shipped 50 million smartphones in the year to 31 March 2014, giving year-on-year growth of more than 70 per cent – although still coming in behind its 60 million unit target.

It is in the process of acquiring Motorola Mobility from Google, which will see it adding to its smartphone volumes as well as gaining a well-known international brand, and Motorola’s experience distributing devices worldwide.

Lenovo still sees the majority of its products sold in its home market, although it has been building its presence across Asia and some other markets, including Russia.

And the company has also recently appointed Colin Giles as VP of its Mobile Business Group, with responsibility for driving growth outside of China. Giles joins Lenovo from equally ambitious Chinese player Huawei, having also held senior management roles at Nokia.

It was also reported last week that Lenovo has a Windows Phone 8.1-powered device in the pipeline, after Microsoft eased its restrictions on the platform to make it more appealing to existing manufacturers of Android hardware.

Lenovo was named as a Windows Phone partner by Microsoft earlier this year.
