Kazam stakes claim on thinnest smartphone crown

15 OCT 2014

Device start-up Kazam announced what it claimed is “the world’s thinnest smartphone”, the 5.15mm thick Tornado 348.

Kazam was created by two former HTC executives, and has already announced seven devices split across two ranges – Trooper in the mid-tier and Thunder at the higher end.

Tornado 348 has a 4.8-inch HD (720p) screen, 8MP rear camera, and 5MP front camera “perfect for the ever-popular selfie”. It includes 16GB of onboard storage and microSD expansion slot, but according to the spec sheet omits LTE connectivity.

It is powered by Android 4.4 (KitKat) running on a 1.7GHz MediaTek octacore processor. It has an aluminium unibody construction.

Michael Coombes, CEO of the company, said at the MediaTek Executive Forum this morning that its partnership with the chipmaker has enabled Kazam to bring products to market much more swiftly than its rivals.

“The industry is moving so fast, I need to take an idea and put it out to the market quickly. In most cases, I can get an idea and have it on the shelf within two months, which is completely unparalleled in the market. Having worked in other big brands, we would be talking about phones 6, 9, 12-months before we got them to market,” he said.

Kazam also differentiates itself through the “attention and care” it puts into supporting customers.

“Simple things like 12-month screen protection, so all our mobile phones, if you break the screen accidentally, we will replace it. Or if you have a problem we can remotely dial-in to your phone using a service called Rescue Me, and we can help you analyse the problem and resolve it in 80 per cent of cases, without the need to return it,” Coombes said.

Tornado 348 will be available in black and white versions across Europe from mid-November.
