Jawbone begins Up3 shipments after manufacture problems

13 APR 2015

Fitness tracker company Jawbone said that its Up3 device is now in mass production and will begin shipping next week, having initially said it would reach the market late in 2014.

In a blog post, Travis Bogard, VP of product management and strategy for the company, said that “as we began to scale our manufacturing process it became clear that, while most units passed our high quality bar, a proportion did not”. This was specifically related to water resistance, with Jawbone initially targeting water resistance of up to 10 metres.

“UP3 will now ship with a water resistance comparable to, and in line with, most other multi-sensor trackers. This means that UP3 is resistant to everyday splashing, including while washing hands or in the shower, but it is unsuitable for swimming or submerged use,” it noted.

Up3 is said to offer a “multi-sensor platform”, including a tri-axis accelerometer, bioimpedance sensors, and skin and ambient temperature sensors.

Jawbone will initially ship devices to US customers who pre-ordered, a process expected to be complete by mid-May. This will be followed by new orders.
