Foxconn and Mozilla announced more details of their anticipated Firefox OS alliance, with the contract manufacturer stating that it is “executing on its vision of ‘eight screens, one network, and one cloud’ with all our strength”.

According to Reuters, in addition to the anticipated smartphones and tablets, Foxconn is looking at products including “TVs, electronic whiteboards and outdoor displays”. It also said that “more than five” devices are in development, without noting the categories these fall in to.

The move comes as Foxconn, best known as the assembler of devices including the iPhone, looks to improve its position in the value chain by offering “a combination of integrated software and hardware offerings”.

The contract manufacturer does not intend offering its own-brand products, however: devices will be made available on a white-label basis for vendors, retailers and operators (among others) to rebadge.

Reuters said that Foxconn is investing in a new unit in southern Taiwan with a “planned 500-1,000 employees” working on Firefox-powered products.

“This cooperation demonstrates the full potential of Firefox OS, the open Web mobile operating system, to enable not only the smartphone but also a wide range of mobile devices,” said Li Gong, SVP of Mobile Devices, President of Asia Operations, and CEO of Mozilla Taiwan.
