Smartphone growth for forked Android, developed under the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), is set for a dramatic slowdown next year, according to ABI Research.

The reason is that Chinese smartphone growth is forecast to fall to 13 per cent while Google’s Android One initiative, which is aimed at users in the developing world, pulls in more Indian vendors into the official Android camp.

Forked Android, or AOSP, growth was 211 per cent in 2013 but is predicted by the research firm to tumble to 18 per cent in 2015.

AOSP growth has been driven in the past by both Chinese and Indian handset vendors, mainly in their respective domestic markets.

However, the Chinese market is slowing and Android One is successfully wooing Indian players such as Micromax, Karbonn, Spice, Intex, and Lava, as well as some of the more internationally-minded Chinese brands like Lenovo and Alcatel.
