Fitbit gains ground in Jawbone dispute – report

04 MAY 2016

Fitbit won the latest round of a legal dispute with Jawbone, reducing the chance the wearables market leader will face an import ban, according to Bloomberg.

The ruling last week saw the final set of patents involved in a US International Trade Commission dispute invalidated. With Fitbit products made overseas, an import ban would leave it unable to bring its products to consumers.

However, the report also said that Jawbone is being allowed to pursue claims that Fitbit stole trade secrets, meaning there is still the potential for disruption. A hearing on this is scheduled for next week.

According to The Verge, Jawbone said the patents “report only a portion” of Jawbone’s case against Fitbit, and a “small subset” of its patent portfolio.

The two companies have been at loggerheads for the best part of a year, with the action launched ahead of Fitbit’s initial public offering.
