China’s top four mobile phone makers accounted for nearly 11 per cent of the $10.2 billion global operating profit generated in Q3, according to Counterpoint Research.

Oppo, Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi saw their combined share of the handset market’s global operating profit jump from less than 2 per cent in Q3 2015 to 10.7 per cent, or $1.1 billion, last quarter.

Oppo’s profit represented 3.9 per cent of the global hardware profit total (up from 0.5 per cent a year ago), Huawei’s increased to 3.3 per cent from 0.7 per cent, Vivo’s hit 3.1 per cent (it wasn’t in Counterpoint’s top five last year), and Xiaomi’s fell to 0.4 per cent from 0.6 per cent (see image below, click to enlarge).

The Counterpoint report noted that the segment’s total profit was down 19 per cent year-on-year, due mainly to Samsung suffering a $3 billion drop in its operating profit after the Galaxy Note 7 battery debacle.

Apple continued to generate the vast majority of the profit in the mobile handset market – 87 per cent in Q3 vs 81 per cent a year ago.
