SGP Technologies, the company behind the Blackphone privacy-oriented smartphone, announced more details of its planned device, including that it will be powered by a 2.0GHz Nvidia Tegra 4i chip.

“With Blackphone we have engineered a high-end smartphone rivaling the top devices on the market in terms of performance and user experience – and with comprehensive embedded privacy features as a crucial differentiator,” said Toby Weir-Jones, CEO of the company.

The smartphone will run the Android 4.4-based PrivatOS, coupled with a “full suite of privacy-enabled applications”. This includes encrypted voice and video calls and text messaging with attachments using technology from Silent Circle; anonymous browsing and mobile VPN protection from Disconnect; and private encrypted cloud storage from SpiderOak.

It will have a fairly mid-tier feature set, including: Europe/international or US LTE support; 16GB of storage; microSD slot; 4.7-inch display; 8MP camera; and integrated WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.

SGP said it selected the Nvidia chip because of its “superior multimedia, web browsing and networking experiences while supporting Blackphone’s unprecedented array of integrated privacy features and services”.

Blackphone went on sale at Mobile World Congress during February 2014, and “quickly sold out” on its pre-sale run. Final specifications are currently being finalised, and devices are set to ship to customers and operators in the EU and Americas in June.
