Troubled device maker BlackBerry said it will not renew the licence for T-Mobile US to sell its products when an existing deal expires later this month, following an earlier spat between the two companies.

In a statement, John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, said: “Regretfully, at this time, our strategies are not complimentary and we must act in the best interest of our BlackBerry customers. We hope to work with T-Mobile again in the future when our business strategies are aligned.”

In February, T-Mobile came under fire from BlackBerry and its supporters, after the US operator sent a targeted promotional campaign to entice users to shift to Apple’s iPhone 5s.

Following the spat, T-Mobile announced a series of deals which applied to BlackBerry products, including the Q10 and Z10 handsets.

In a blog post at that time, Mike Sievert, CMO of T-Mobile US, wrote: “It’s just not in us to lock customers in to annual service contracts, make them wait for upgrades … or limit them to one or the other type of device or OS.  That’s not what we’re about.”

So far it is not clear how many BlackBerry devices T-Mobile US shifted, but the fact that both companies have seemed lukewarm to the partnership means it is unlikely to have been significant.
