BlackBerry announced its “Z3, Jakarta Edition” at an event in Indonesia, describing it as “the first BlackBerry smartphone built specifically for Indonesia”.

Expected to retail at IDR2,199,000 ($191), the device is the result of BlackBerry’s partnership with contract manufacturer Foxconn, designed to shore-up its flagging devices business. While Z3, Jakarta Edition may boost its volume, it is hardly supportive of BlackBerry’s enterprise focus, although presumably there will be some scale benefits for the company in driving adoption of BlackBerry 10 powered smartphones.

The Z3 has a 5-inch qHD screen, 5MP camera and 8GB of onboard storage, placing it firmly in the mid-tier of current smartphone products. It is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor and includes a MicroSD storage slot.

BlackBerry also said it will offer “the best Bahasa typing experience on a touch screen”, as well as content exclusive to Indonesia, including a set of BBM Stickers featuring local characters.

John Chen (pictured), CEO of BlackBerry, said: “From conception to delivery, the BlackBerry Z3, Jakarta Edition was designed specifically with our Indonesian customers in mind. This device gives users more ways to connect, share and communicate, providing the best tool for secure, reliable communications and collaboration with friends, family and co-workers.”

BlackBerry announced Z3 at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. It has not stated if it plans launching it in other international markets.

Earlier this year, Chen was forced to affirm his support for the company’s handset business, after it was reported an exit is on the cards if BlackBerry cannot turn a profit on the business – which in itself is not an unreasonable position.

The company recognised revenue on just 1.3 million smartphones in the most recent quarter, way below its peak.
