LIVE FROM CES 2015, LAS VEGAS: Ambitious Taiwanese device vendor Asus strengthened its portfolio with the launch of a new version of its Zenfone smartphone, a new “optical zoom smartphone”, and “2-in-1 laptops” that the company claims transform into the world’s slimmest Windows tablets.

The Zenfone 2 (pictured, left) builds on success of the original smartphone, which Asus chairman Jonney Shih said ships 1.5 million units a month. It boasts a 5.5-inch screen, a 13MP camera and supports LTE-Advanced technology powered by a 64-bit quadcore Intel Atom Z3580 processor. “It’s the world’s first 4GB RAM smartphone,” proclaimed Shih. The Zenfone 2 – updated with a new ZenUI interface and running Android Lollipop – will retail from $199 from March.

The ZenFone Zoom (pictured, right) is touted as the world’s thinnest smartphone to feature a 13MP camera with a 3x optical zoom. Also supporting Android’s Lollipop OS, the Zoom will be available in Q2 from $399.

The world’s third-largest tablet vendor also unveiled its “razor-thin 2-in-1 Windows laptops that transform seamlessly into Windows tablets via a smart magnetic hinge.”

Shih also poked fun at Apple, claiming the Transformer Book Chi is “thinner than Air.”

The Chi series of products come in three sizes; the flagship T300 Chi (pictured, left) has a 12.5-inch screen, transforming into a tablet that is 7.6mm thin. The 10.1-inch T100 Chi claims a 7.2mm tablet and all-day battery life, and the T90 Chi is an 8.9-inch model weighing 750g. The family of products will be available in February. The T300 will retail from $799, the T100 from $399 and the T90 from $299.
