Apple has scheduled a press event for 9 September, at which it is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhone – which has already been the topic of significant speculation.

The date is around 12 months after Apple’s last iPhone launch, and comes shortly after the IFA event in Berlin, where Samsung, Huawei, Sony and LG Electronics are all expected to unveil new devices.

The iPhone 6 has already been the subject of intense speculation, although there is little in the way of firm facts so-far.

Apple is expected to unveil a 4.7-inch device that will be the successor to the iPhone 5s. But there has also been speculation that it will announce a ‘phablet’ device with a 5.5-inch display either at the same time or soon after.

It is also unclear how the company will deal with its ‘entry level’ iPhone activities. While it has previously kept supporting an older model at a lower price point, last year it announced the iPhone 5c, a new device with a lower (but not cheap) price tag.

And it has long been rumoured that Apple is set to introduce a smartwatch, although it is not clear if it will use the iPhone showcase to do this.
