Amazon announced availability of its low-cost Fire tablet in China, working with internet giant Baidu for search, apps and online video.

The company said the device also offers “an easy and affordable option for customers who want to read or learn English”. According to Amazon, there are already “millions” of customers in China using Kindle e-readers.

Amazon also said it has sold “millions” of Fire tablets since launch, although the CNY499 ($78) price point is higher than the $50 in the US.

Earlier this year, David Limp, SVP of devices for Amazon, suggested that low cost tablets will lead to people using them for “new and different things in their household”.
