Amazon is working on a “tablet-like” device powered by its Alexa voice technology, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

The company has been developing Alexa for some time, and the technology powers its Echo wireless speaker. It has worked with a number of third-parties to enable Echo/Alexa to offer voice-control of home entertainment and automation devices, and apps (referred to as “Skills”) are also available for Uber and Dominos Pizza, among others.

The mooted device is being readied by Amazon’s Lab126 hardware unit, and may not become a commercial product. But Amazon does have a significant presence in the tablet market through its Fire device line.

And while for Echo voice is the predominant method of input, it would be interesting to see how Alexa is integrated into a device with touch-screen.

The WSJ report said that Amazon is also thinking beyond its own devices, seeing leadership in the voice-controlled internet services market as a way to increase its influence. And with Google Now, Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, the market is certainly seeing some interest.
