A new device launched by Taiwan’s Acer in Thailand this week is the second smartphone to be based on Intel’s new ‘Lexington’ platform for emerging markets.

The Acer Liquid C1 is the first smartphone in the Asia-Pacific region based on Intel’s 1.2 GHz Atom Z2420 processor launched at CES last month.

It follows the launch last week of a Lexington phone called Yolo offered in conjunction with Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom. Indian vendor Lava has also been signed up to build Lexington devices.

The 4.3-inch Liquid C1 runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It will launch in Thailand next month costing THB9,990 ($335).

Acer general manager Alan Chiang described the device as the “first of its kind in Asia Pacific.”

“Acer Liquid C1 marks a successful milestone and proves that the smartphone is a small form factor of computing device which requires expertise from leading technology companies who truly understand and lead in innovation,” he said.

For Intel – the dominant chip player in the PC space – Lexington is seen as a major play to adapt its products to smartphones and tablets, where it is struggling to compete with rival chipmakers such as Qualcomm, Samsung and ARM.
