Cloud-native CSPs need unified approach to signalling to enable 5G opportunities

With 5G, NFV and SDN all arriving almost simultaneously and alongside CSP efforts to digitally transform and become cloud-native, there is huge potential for CSPs to operate vast network capacity in flexible and automated ways. The rewards for doing so will be immense and could reset the CSP business case onto a more sustainable footing. The rewards for doing so will be immense and could reset the CSP business case onto a more sustainable footing. However, the changes won’t happen overnight nor in a single step.

A protracted period of innovation, experimentation and deployment will be necessary in which CSPs migrate from 3G to 4G to 5G and previous generations will co-exist with 5G for many more years. This intergenerational situation means the new cloud-native mode of operation will need to be accommodated into legacy networks.

This paper explores how CSPs will adopt a unified approach to signalling across the cellular generations and how this will enable them to maximise their 5G opportunities.
