BBM for Android and iOS in beta – again

04 OCT 2013

BlackBerry has reportedly put its BBM app for Android and iOS back into beta tests, having fumbled its planned rollout late last month.

According to CrackBerry, a new version of the app has been made available to users selected as part of a test group, which has “some changes in place from previous versions aside from the normal bug fix”.

The cross-platform version of BBM had been scheduled for release on 21 September 2013, but was “paused” when an earlier, unreleased version of the Android app was made available via file sharing sites.

This “resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways”, BlackBerry said.

The company has not announced when the official versions will be released, although it said in a tweet earlier this week that it is “still 100 per cent committed to bringing BBM to Android and iPhone”.

This week’s report said that the app has gained a new welcome screen explaining app notifications, a previously permanent status bar can now be disabled, and the whole user interface has “received some more polish”.
