Fast-growing Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi said it sold a record 2.11 million handsets during a 24-hour online sale on Wednesday.

Sales during the company’s Mi Fan Festival were up sharply from a year when it sold 1.3 million devices. In addition to smartphones, it sold 770,000 smart appliances and 39,000 Mi TVs, with overall sales revenue reaching CNY2.08 billion ($342 million).

Xiaomi said it set a Guinness World Record for selling the “most mobile phones on a single online platform in 24 hours”.

The company, which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, tripled its global sales of smartphones in Q4 from the year earlier, shipping 18.6 million units. It was ranked fifth behind Samsung, Apple, Lenovo and Huawei, according to Gartner.

In the domestic market, IDC said Xiaomi took the top position last year, with a 12.5 per cent share – up from 5.3 per cent a year ago. Its shipments expanded 187 per cent last year.
