Application processor (AP) makers in Taiwan and China are working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to compete against Qualcomm-Samsung in the global 10nm AP market, DigiTimes reported.

MediaTek, HiSilicon and Spreadtrum have opted to fabricate their next-generation smartphone APs using TSMC’s 16/10nm processing platforms, sources told DigiTimes.

Qualcomm is cooperating with Samsung to produce its next-gen chips using 10nm technology at the Korea-based foundry and has not engaged in any trial production of 10nm products at TSMC, the sources said.

TSMC’s initial clients of its 10nm process will include Apple, MediaTek, HiSilicon and Spreadtrum. Its 10nm manufacturing process is expected to enter volume production in Q4 or early 2017.
